Islamabad and sites of Islamabad

 

Islamabad is the Capital of Pakistan and is located at the northern end of the Potohar Plateau surrounded by Margalla hills. It is lush green and peaceful place. It is the city of twentieth century with all necessities of life.

Newly constructed Shah Faisal Mosque, President House, Prime Minister House, Supreme Court, Agricultural Development Bank, United Bank and many other buildings are the fine specimen of modern and impressive architecture.

A number of Shopping centers, parks, playgrounds, fountains, picnic spots make this city beautiful. Due to lots of places and things of tourist interest, this city and its surroundings are a great attraction for tourists from all over the world.

HOW TO ARRIVE?

Islamabad International Airport is served by many Airlines like PIA, British Airways and Saudi Airlines etc., thus linking Rawalpindi-Islamabad with the rest of the world.

Internally PIA and the Pakistan Railways link Rawalpindi-Islamabad with all the main cities of Pakistan.

Islamabad and Rawalpindi lie on the Historic Grand Trunk (G.T) Road, which now is a section of the Asian Highway from Istanbul to Bangkok.

SITES

NATIONAL ART GALLERY

Idara-e-Saqafat-e-Pakistan (National Council of the Arts) runs this gallery. The National Art Gallery is located at House No. 77, Street No. 48, F-7/4, Islamabad.

SPORTS COMPLEX

A huge modern sports complex for indoor and outdoor games has been built with the Chinese assistance. It is located on the Shahrah-e-Kashmir near the tourist camping site.

DAMAN-E-KOH HILL PARK

The terraced garden on Margalla Hills known as 'View Point' offers panoramic view of Islamabad. Restaurants and snack facilities are available. It is ideal for a trip in the evening with family and friends.

SHAKARPARIAN HILLS

Shakarparian hills are situated near Zero-Point, at a height of 609 meters. Its terraced garden offers pleasant and sweeping vistas of Margalla and Murree hills, Rawal Lake, Rawal Pindi and Islamabad. Snack bar facilities are available.

RAWAL LAKE

The glistening man-made lake is only 8 km from Islamabad. The terraced gardens and the lake are ideal for picnics, fishing and boating. Highest point in the garden commands a panoramic view of the lake, Margalla and Murree Hill, Rawalpindi and the Islamabad City. Snack bar facilities are available.

SHAH FAISAL MOSQUE

This beautiful mosque is situated in the heart of the Margalla hills. It was designed by a renowned Turkish Architect, Vedat Dalokay and named after late King Faisal of Saudi Arabia. It is spread over 1,89,705 sq. meters with 88 meters high minarets and 40 meters high main prayer hall. The main prayer hall can accommodate 10,000 persons while the covered porticoes and verandahs can take over 24,000 worshippers. The main courtyard has space for 40,000 people.

LOK VIRSA MUSEUM

The Lok Virsa is charged with the preservation of folk and traditional culture of Pakistan. It has a library of folk musical instruments, folk costumes and jewelleries. Its crafts museum, located near Shakarparian Hill, is worth a visit, books on culture heritage, folk songs and music cassettes are available for sale here and also at their sales centre near Super Market. Museum timings are 8.30 a.m. to 7.00 p.m.

MINI MUSEUM

Department of Natural History has established a small museum at the gate of the Marghazar, right in front of the Zoo's gate where skeletons of elephant and whale have been put on display.

ISLAMABAD MUSEUM

Islamabad museum presents a long historic sequence of the land where Pakistan is situated today. Pakistan has been a seat of the worlds leading civilizations from the time immemorial. There is plenty of evidence to support this argument now on display in Islamabad museum. For example, 20 million years old fossils remains, 2 million years old man-made stone tools, 7000 years old early human settlements which lead to the world famous Indus Civilization, Gandhara Grave Culture and Gandhara art, early Islamic settlement and Mughal period, their art and craft.

The Museum is located at House #: 41, Street #: 3, Sector: E-7, Islamabad. It is open for visitors, Thursday to Tuesday from 9:30 to 6:30 hrs without break. Wednesday is weekly off and there is a prayer break on every Friday from 12:30 to 14:00 hrs.

ROSE AND JASMINE GARDEN

Rose and Jasmine garden is famous for its roses. It has 250 different varieties of roses as well as a dozen types of Jasmines. Flowers shows are occasionally held here, particularly during spring. Nearby is the tourist camping site.

PLAY LAND

A Japanese style children's park has been established near the zoo. It is a gift from the children of Japan to the Children of Pakistan.

FATIMA JINNAH PARK

The entire sector of F-9 is being developed as an attractive urban park which will have a profusion of lakes, rock gardens, aquariums, fountains etc. It has been named after Miss Fatima Jinnah, sister of the founder of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah.

CHATTAR BAGH

Chattar Bagh is a beautiful park situated on the way to Murree.

BARI IMAM

Nurpur a small village at the foot of Margalla Hills, is famous for the mirror studded shrines of Hazrat Shah Abdul Latif Kazmi known as Bari Imam. The shrine was originally built by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb and attracts the a large number of followers. His death anniversary is usually observed in the first week of May beginning Monday through Thursday with lots of festivities representing the Potohar culture and attracts people from all over the Potohar Plateau as well as Frontier Province. There is a cave in the Margalla Hills on the back of his shrine where he sat for meditation.

SHRINE OF PIR MEHER ALI SHAH

The shrine of Pir Syed Meher Ali Shah of Golra Sharif is located 15 km from Rawalpindi. He was a descendant of a Syed family and had links with Syed Abdul Qair Jilani of Baghdad.

MINI ZOO

Just below the Daman-e-Koh in the Marghazar is located a mini zoo. This mini zoo has got many animals specially those of children interest.
